Are you at a crossroads in your career and wondering whether to pursue a new passion or continue in your current corporate job?
In 2009, I faced the same dilemma as my role was being outsourced overseas. I had to decide if I wanted to continue in the corporate world or do something different. After some soul-searching, I decided to get my Master’s in education because I enjoyed teaching, education, and helping others with skills that I knew.
Once I finished my Master’s, I started providing education consulting in various schools, and at the same time, I started building my own online presence. I realized that it was essential for businesses to have a strong online presence to sell their products and services to their customers.
Although I had various skills and technology experience, including mainframe, product management, and quality assurance, none of this was directly related to what I was becoming interested in next – building an online presence.
At that time, there were various options to start an online presence, such as Wix, Squarespace, and WordPress. I chose WordPress because, at the time, 80% of the world’s web pages were built with WordPress, and it seemed that there was some flexibility to grow your website with this platform.
I wanted to learn for myself how to build a website. The first place I started was on YouTube. I researched various videos and found one person, Tyler Moore, who was an excellent online teacher. I followed his step-by-step video and created my first few websites. I enjoyed the process, and even though it took many hours of my time to go through the videos, I learned how the fundamentals of WordPress worked, how to buy a domain name, get hosting, and build a WordPress website from scratch.
Starting something new can be challenging, but it’s essential to keep learning and growing. If you’re thinking about making a career change or pursuing a new passion, take a moment to reflect on your goals and the steps you need to take to achieve them. With hard work and dedication, you can succeed in building a new career that brings you joy and fulfillment.
